Is a Boxer Right for You? The Boxer is an amazing breed. They are fun, exuberant, and act like a clown most of the time. However, even though I believe they are the hands down best breed of dog, they will not suit everyone and everyone's lifestyle. The following is a list of things to consider when considering a Boxer. Is your favorite pastime outdoors? Boxers can tolerate warm and cool temperatures, but they do not do well in extremely hot or cold climates. If you plan on taking your Boxer buddy for long hikes on trails in the dead of winter, the Boxer is not the dog for you. How do you plan to give him his exercise? Boxers are active and very intelligent. So, he will need to have some physical exercise. He will also need a playmate. Now, do not get me wrong, I do not mean that you need to adopt 2 Boxers, what I mean is he will require some of your time. Actually, he will take all that he can get. Boxers crave our attention. He will need mental stimulation, not only in the form of playtime but also through training. Remember that a trained Boxer is a happy Boxer, and that a bored Boxer can become a bad Boxer. Are you looking for a serious dog? Although Boxers are hard workers, they are also clowns. They "kidney-bean" if you just look their way. You don't even have to say a word. They can go from all business to look at me, look at me in a matter of seconds. This is one of my favorite things about the Boxer breed, and one of the reasons that makes so many owners like myself love them so. Are you looking for a guard dog? Contrary to popular belief, Boxers are NOT guard dogs. They are very capable of protecting their family and most will do so if threatened, but, the Boxer is Not aggressive by nature. Many Boxers are abandoned because they are often sought to be a guard dog. If you are looking for surveillance, invest in a security system, not a Boxer! Do you have children? If you have children or even planning to some day have children a Boxer would be a perfect addition to your family. They absolutely love children and honestly, the more the merrier. Do you mind a 60 or 70 pound lap dog? Boxers are very affectionate and need somewhat constant interaction from its family. If you are looking for a dog that is independent and will go off alone and entertain himself. "You are barking up the wrong tree." The Boxer will follow you all around your home, and yard. They want to be with you...that's the bottom line here. As for me, I wouldn't have it any other way!! Do you have unconditional love to give? This question not
only concerns the Boxer but ALL breeds. I think the most amazing thing
about dogs is that they are capable of giving unconditional love to
their owners. It is important to return the favor. Love him even when he
does things he knows he Please let me know if you have any questions about all I have said. I will do all that I can to assist you in the big decision of whether or not a Boxer is Right for You. ~Donna Walker~
