Warning--Acepromazine

Your best friend may be in danger...

Acepromazine is commonly used by veterinarians. However, when used on Boxers, it can be hazardous to their health. Acepromazine is a tranquilizer that is used as a preanesthetic agent. This drug tends to cause an arrhythmia of the heart, known as first-degree heart block in Boxers. And it may also cause hypertension (sever lowering of the blood pressure) in many Boxers.

Only a short time ago, an announcement was placed in the cardiology section of the Veterinary Information Network (a computer network for practicing veterinarians.) The announcement was titled "Acepromazine and Boxers." It described several adverse reactions to the drug, and all the reported adverse reactions were in Boxers!! The reactions included collapse, respiratory arrest, and profound bradycardia (slow heart rate, less than 60 beats per minute). It was suggested by this announcement that Acepromazine should not be used in dogs of the Boxer breed because of breed related sensitivity to the drug.

You should know that Acepromazine is the most prescribed tranquilizer in veterinary medicine. For your Boxers sake, do NOT let your veterinarian give him this drug. It is your responsibility as the owner to protect your dog from harmful things, and Acepromazine is one of them. Tell your veterinarian that you do NOT want your dog to have this particular drug and make sure that everyone in their office knows it. Do NOT let your veterinarians lack of knowledge about this drug and Boxers keep you from taking control of the situation. Ask your veterinarian to refer to their "Handbook of Veterinary Drugs", if they will not take your word on it. Say no to Acepromazine....your Boxer will thank you!!
